"The Tarnished Saber" by Angelo D. Juarez (1993) tells the story of Major Azor Howett Nickerson. Born in northern Ohio, Nickerson was drawn into the Civil War and played an important role in the Battle of Antietam and was instrumental in stopping Pickett's Charge at the Battle of Gettysburg. He sat with President Lincoln on the speaker's program when the president delivered his Gettysburg Address in November 1863. While Nickerson distinguished himself in the war, he later destroyed his brilliant career with a scandalous love triangle. Illustrated.
